CAREER FAQ

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF PROJECTS I WILL BE STAFFED ON?

Typically at QES, analysts get involved with a variety of projects across many industries including pharmaceuticals, technology, healthcare, and others. The majority of QES’s projects are related to intellectual property or antitrust and competition.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?

Analysts' work is widely varied from day to day and spans all dimensions of a project lifecycle, from market research and preparation of memos/summaries to programming and creating charts and exhibits.  Tasks include gathering relevant documents and presenting them in a memo or summary, using statistical tools and programming to analyze data, auditing reports, preparing charts, tables and exhibits, and market research. Analysts are also involved in training and recruiting new Analysts.

CAN YOU PROVIDE A SPECIFIC CASE EXAMPLE?

An example of a type of QES project that is relatively limited in scope is the creation of an expert report which analyzes the commercial success of a patented product and the relationship of such success to the product’s patented feature(s). A recent commercial success case involving a pharmaceutical product called for a case team of a QES manager and two Analysts, all working under the direction of Chris Vellturo. The first principal step in QES’s analysis – spearheaded by one of the Analysts – was to understand the marketplace in which the relevant product competes. This research phase of the case involved the review of deposition testimony of the product manager, the compilation and synthesis of information and data contained in documents both produced in the litigation and publicly available, and the creation of tables and graphs providing information about the prescription activity, sales, and market shares of products in the relevant space. A second key step in this case was to analyze the effect of a market event related to the dissemination of information related to the patent in question. The second Analyst took ownership of this component of the case, working directly with Dr. Vellturo to develop a set of econometric and statistical models, based largely on QES’s understanding of the marketplace developed in the research phase, to quantitatively test the effect and statistical significance of the market event. The models were developed in Stata and Excel and were presented as a series of exhibits attached to QES’s full report. Both Analysts were further involved in preparing the final expert report, and in preparing Dr. Vellturo to be deposed about the contents of his report and exhibits. This case ultimately settled before reaching the trial phase.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A PARTICULAR MAJOR IN YOUR CANDIDATES?

We are looking for applicants with a quantitative major (Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Statistics, etc.)  A background in economics will be useful, but not required.

WHAT IS THE COMPANY CULTURE LIKE AT QES?

QES provides an interactive environment in which analysts can acquire new skills and improve existing ones. By getting a broad exposure in all the assigned projects, there is a steep learning curve by which they gain a solid understanding of the analytical methods and economic principles we employ.

WHAT ARE THE HOURS LIKE?

Like many management and economic consulting firms, QES's work is in part dependent on case deadlines.  Hours can vary week to week in keeping with consulting industry norms.
